SC-A Paper
The use of SC-A rotogravure grades in the printing industry has been steadily increasing in recent years, particularly in the United States. SC papers, which are commonly used in magazines, catalogs, and commercial printing, have seen a rise in demand due to a growth in local production. In fact, some European producers have even introduced a special grade, SC Cat, specifically designed for sales catalogs printed in gravure.
Rotogravure printing is the dominant method for printing SC papers, accounting for approximately 80% of usage, while offset printing makes up the remaining 20%. However, there is competition from other paper grades, particularly ultralight weight coated papers for top-quality SC rotogravure papers, and film coated offset for SC offset grade.
One of the reasons for the increased popularity of SC-A+ grade is its ability to rival coated mechanical pulp papers in terms of quality, while also offering a more competitive price. This has resulted in SC-A+ grade gaining some market share in the industry. On the other hand, SC-A grade is a suitable choice when price and information capacity are the main factors to consider.
The basis weights for SC papers typically range from 39 to 80 g/m2, with 52, 56, and 60 g/m2 being the most common. Thanks to the high filler content, fine mechanical pulp, and heavy supercalendering process, SC rotogravure paper is dense, smooth, and glossy enough to meet the demands of even the most discerning rotogravure printing applications.
The main end uses for SC-A rotogravure grades are in magazines, catalogs (particularly low basis weight SC papers), and commercial printing. SC offset grade, on the other hand, is primarily used for TV listings, magazines, direct mail advertising, and Sunday supplements.
In conclusion, the demand for SC-A rotogravure grades is on the rise, particularly in the United States, as local production continues to grow. The introduction of special grades, such as SC Cat, for sales catalogs printed in gravure has further contributed to this increase in demand. While rotogravure printing remains the dominant method for SC papers, there is competition from other paper grades. However, SC-A+ grade has gained market share due to its comparable quality and competitive price. With a range of basis weights available, SC rotogravure paper offers the density, smoothness, and glossiness necessary for high-quality printing applications.
